Introduction

Alex Christie practising homeopath and allergy consultant

Alex Christie (LCHE), Author of theCph Newsletter

Hello and welcome! This monthly newsletter, continues to bring an exciting co-operation between The College of Practical Homeopathy (CPH) and Alex Christie.  In November’s newsletter we covered homeopathic remedies for arthritis.  This month I will make dietary recommendations and suggest the best supplements to take for arthritis.  I will also cover fungal toenails, what to take to prevent a hangover, indigestion and anger or irritation (useful at this time of year!).  I am also going to mention the dangers of aspartame the artificial sweetener found in so many products these days such as Diet Coke, Slimline drinks, sugar-free squashes, diet yoghurts, chewing gum, and in Nutri-Sweet sweeteners.

Remember, if you would like me to cover any specific topic, please e-mail me and I will try and do so in one of our future newsletters.

Arthritis Supplementation to Aid Recovery and Recommendations

Aid Recovery:

  • Vitamin C 1 g daily (check it does not have colourings, aspartame or saccharine)
  • Vitamin E 500mg daily (Metabolics or Solgar)
  • Zinc 15mg daily (if taken for more than 1 month include 2mg copper or take a multivit with copper)
  • Glucosamine sulfate 1500mg and chondroitin 1000mg complex tablets with Calcium ascorbate Vitamin C and Manganese – take 2 daily - Solgar
  • Fish Oils 1000 mg 3 time a day (not cod liver oil or flax oil) (Metabolics, Solgar, Nutri)

Do low impact exercise such as walking or swimming to strengthen muscles and improve overall joint condition.

Recommendations:

  • Eat more sulphur-containing foods i.e. asparagus, eggs, garlic, onions, green leafy vegetables, fresh vegetables, non-acidic fruits, whole grains, oatmeal, brown rice, fish, soybean products and avocados.  Tart red cherries can relieve pain and inflammation – eat about 20 daily.  Sulphur used for repair and rebuilding of bone, cartilage and connective tissue.
  • Consume foods containing the amino acid histidine, including rice, wheat, and rye.  Good for removing excess metals from the body.
  • Eat fresh pineapple frequently – bromelain reduces inflammation.
  • Eat some form of fibre i.e. ground flaxseeds, oat bran, or rice bran daily.
  • Reduce fat in your diet.  Avoid dairy products, especially milk, and also red meat.  Also avoid caffeine, citrus fruits, paprika, salt, tobacco, and everything containing sugar.
  • Avoid nightshade vegetables – peppers, aubergine, tomatoes, white potatoes.  Solanine interferes with enzymes in muscles and may cause pain.
  • Do not take supplements containing iron – it is suspected of being involved in pain, swelling, and joint destructions.  Consume iron-rich foods instead.  i.e. blackstrap molasses, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, fish, lima beans, peas.
  • Cold packs can relieve pain
  • Hot baths may provide relief.  Raw lemon rubs and hot castor oil packs are extremely beneficial.
  • Take a free-form amino acid complex regularly to help repair tissue.
  • Check for possible food allergies/ intolerances / Candida.
  • Consider a test for toxic metals in your body.
  • Spend time outdoors in fresh air and sunshine.  Exposure to sun prompts the synthesis of Vit D3 needed for proper bone formation.
  • Get regular moderate exercise – this is essential for reducing pain and retarding joint deterioration.  Bike riding and water exercises are great.
  • If you are overweight lose the excess pounds, these cause and aggravate osteoarthritis.

Fungal Toenails

Fungal toenails are an expression of systemic Candida.  In the past there was a balance between nature with all its bacteria, viruses and fungi which thrived on their various hosts; bacteria and viruses thriving on living creatures, fungi on dead matter and soil.  Then Sir Alexander Fleming discovered that a particular fungus called penicillin produced a powerful chemical that destroyed bacteria.  So diseases that until then had been life-threatening such as tuberculosis, dysentery, and pneumonia, were able to be treated.

Medicine, empowered with this new fungal therapy, began to use it for every infection and fever.  Antibiotics came to be prescribed for diseases that had nothing to do with bacteria as well, such as influenza and viral infections.  Bacteria, since they could no longer count on thriving on the bodies of people and pets started to mutate and become resistant to penicillin.  So scientists developed different strains of antibiotics to outwit the bacteria.  But the bacteria continued to mutate and become increasingly resistant to the antibiotics, ending in the arrival of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aurea), which is resistant to 90% pf antibiotics.  Despite the superbug bacteria have generally become weaker and viruses and fungi stronger.  In place of bacterial infections we find gastroenteritis, influenza and viral pneumonia more often.  And an epidemic of Candida albicans and yeast infections is prevalent.

Toenail problems are spreading and our bodies cannot fight the fungal invasion brought about through over-prescribing of anti-biotics.  Fungal infection of toenails is deep.  Your immune system is busy combating the fungal infection in other parts of your body so it won’t be able to deal with the toe-nails.  To treat this you need to avoid the Candida-feeding foods and apply treatment directly to the toe-nail.  I strongly recommend seeing a practitioner who specialises in Candida treatment to work on eliminating this from inside at the same time.

Food to Avoid

Avoid the following:

  • Yeast products including beer, lager, bread, marmite, soy sauce, canned foods, brewer’s yeast, pizzas, pitta bread, nan bread, ready-made sauces.
  • Mushrooms, vinegar, smoked meats and fish, cheese.
  • Any refined carbohydrates and high sugar foods such as cakes, biscuits, desserts, syrups, white breads and bagels, alcohol

Support your liver so it produces enough bile to suppress Candida.  I recommend the following supplements (Metabolics or Solgar)

    1. Milkthistle tincture
    2. NAC
    3. Alpha-lipoic Acid

(Take 3 daily of NAC and Alpha-lipoic acid, and 20 drops twice daily of milkthistle tincture)

Also Dr Ali Advises the following for fungal nails:

  • Paint your nails once a week with a cotton bud soaked in Zalim lotion (£7 for10ml from The Integrated Medical Centre Shop)
  • Every morning for 2 months rub a few drops of fresh lime juice onto your nail.
  • Apply Kolonji Oil (Amir’s £8 for 60 ml) every night for 2 months (from the Integrated Medical Centre shop

Aspartame - A Dangerous Substance

Aspartame is by far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods. Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names, NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death as recently disclosed in a February 1994 Department of Health and Human Services report. A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame: Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

Aspartame is made up of three chemicals: Aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. The book, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, by James and Phyllis Balch, lists aspartame under the category of "chemical poison." As you shall see, that is exactly what it is.

Aspartic Acid (40% Of Aspartame)
Dr Russell L. Blaylock, a professor of Neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi, recently published a book thoroughly detailing the damage that is caused by the ingestion of excessive aspartic acid from aspartame. Blaylock makes use of almost 500 scientific references to show how excess free excitatory amino acids such as aspartic acid and glutamic acid in our food supply are causing serious chronic neurological disorders and a myriad of other acute symptoms.

Summary of How Aspartate (And Glutamate) Causes Damage

Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as "excitotoxins." They "excite" or stimulate the neural cells to death.

Aspartic acid is an amino acid. Taken in its free form (unbound to proteins) it significantly raises the blood plasma level of aspartate and glutamate. The excess aspartate and glutamate in the blood plasma shortly after ingesting aspartame or products with free glutamic acid (glutamate precursor) leads to a high level of those neurotransmitters in certain areas of the brain.

The blood brain barrier which normally protects the brain from excess glutamate and aspartate as well as toxins 1) is not fully developed during childhood, 2) does not fully protect all areas of the brain, 3) is damaged by numerous chronic and acute conditions, and 4) allows excess glutamate and aspartate into the brain even when intact.

The excess glutamate and aspartate slowly begin to destroy neurons. The large majority (75%+) of neural cells in a particular area of the brain are killed before any clinical symptoms of a chronic illness are noticed. A few of the many chronic illnesses that have been shown to be contributed to by long-term exposure excitatory amino acid damage include:

Multiple sclerosis (MS), ALS, memory loss, hormonal problems, hearing loss, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, hypoglycemia, AIDS dementia, brain lessions, and neuroendocrine disorders.

The risks to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with certain chronic health problems from excitotoxins are great.

The exact mechanism of acute reactions to excess free glutamate and aspartate is currently being debated. As reported to the FDA, those reactions include:(5) Headaches/migraines, nausea, abdominal pains, fatigue (blocks sufficient glucose entry into brain), sleep problems, vision problems, anxiety attacks, depression, and asthma/chest tightness.

One common complaint of persons suffering from the effect of aspartame is memory loss. Prof. Olney informed Searle in 1971 that aspartic acid caused holes in the brain of mice.

So don’t take sweeteners or drink diet drinks if you value your health!  My mother-in-law is suffering from mild dementia.  However, recently she has become excessively anxious and paranoid and is convinced someone is out to kill her, only she isn’t sure who.  She has suddenly forgotten how to use her answerphone.  She has panic attacks when left alone and phones us (up to 6 times a day) in a state of terror, but doesn’t know what she is terrified of.  What has changed?  She started drinking Orangina Lite…..

Christmas Celebrations, Indigestion, Irritation and Hangovers!

Christmas and New Year are typically a time when we overindulge in both food and drink.  There are some simple steps you can take to avoid indigestion and a hangover on the following day.

The supplements I recommend are:

  • Digestive enzymes with any large meal or rich food.  This helps you digest what you eat and can avoid indigestion after the meal.  Two I recommend are Similase by Nutri and Polyzyme Forte by Biocare.
  • If you are drinking large quantities of alcohol match your alcohol intake with water.  Also take Allclear by Metabolics.  This helps the liver metabolise the alcohol you drink and is particularly recommended before over-indulging in alcohol.  Allcelar can help avoid a hangover the next day.
  • Nux Vomica is the homeopathic remedy par excellence for hangovers if you have not managed to avoid one.  Take regularly throughout the day in 30c or 200C.
  • As I mentioned last year, nux vomica is also a great remedy to take if you are about to meet really irritating relatives!  I suggest you take 200C if the person you are going to meet is challenging to your peaceful state and tends to make you angry, and make sure you have some in your pocket in case you need to take more to keep calm during the day!
